When I see these ordered rows of glorious vines at a stunning winery here in Victoria, I see an elegant set of systems, enabling the winery to produce the liquid delight, we know as wine.
But what’s this got to do with your professional services business? Stay with me a moment and I’ll show you how valuable this distinction is, for your own business….
For the vineyard & winery to produce wine they can sell for a profit, there are many systems coming together… There’s a system for growing the vines. They need to be planted in rows and each vine stock, grown a certain distance apart from each other.
Then there’s the system of protecting the grapes from birds – see those nets!
Then there’s the system around harvesting the grapes, crushing, and allowing it to ferment into wine.
Then they need to market themselves and sell their wine.
Similarly these processes are part of your own business, but perhaps occurring in reverse, where you market and pre-sell your services, then deliver that service to your client.
In both cases, there are a set of processes and systems operating behind the scenes, to keep everyone who’s involved in the business, doing what they need to be doing… Whether that be to create a bottle of wine, or to help a property buyer with their property purchase.
And the strength of delivering consistent quality work, relies on these systems… Whether new staff are hired and brought in, or a staff member takes leave, or when you The Business Owner, wants some time off.
So identifying which systems are critical to bringing in clients and delivering your core paid services, is an important first step in systemising your business, so you can scale and grow successfully.
What’s important is to know is, that there’s actually a process and system, for systemising your business.
But… unfortunately, many business owners are stuck in the first or second phase, of being the bottleneck in their business and not having their processes actually documented in an accessible way to their staff.
Reflect for a moment, on your own business.
Who currently has the knowledge in your team, for the way they do things? For the the way they perform their role, their tasks, their decision making on certain things?
Is it each individual alone?
Is there some shared knowledge amongst your team?
Is it mostly in your head… and do You alone delegate it?
But most importantly… Ask yourself…
Where is the information documented and stored, for my staff to access?
Is it actually documented?
Is it easy for them to use and follow, especially when they’re covering for a co-worker on annual leave, or who are home unwell?
Are you thinking there may be some gaps here?
You’re not alone.
It’s common for many business, even those who have been in business for decades, and really successful businesses… to be missing the successful systemisation part.
And it’s not their fault.
Because businesses grow organically over time, through the owners and their staff and team… and systemising is not always on their radar… Until they discover the true value and benefit of doing so.
I therefore encourage you to Get Interested, in finding a way to document your most critical business systems… Have your team consistently deliver high quality services and solutions to your clients, in a way that’s scaleable for the business growth you desire and are planning for.
